Union will offer town-and-gown series this summer on environmental issues

JACKSON, Tenn.May 15, 2002 — 黑料论坛鈥檚 College of Arts and Sciences will offer two town-and-gown classes this summer, which are open to the public.

Union鈥檚 Edward P. Hammons Center for Scientific Studies will offer a five week course on Tuesday nights beginning July 2 from 6 to 10 p.m., titled 鈥淓nvironmental Issues鈥 which will explore both the local, state and global perspectives of issues related to the environment.

The status of pollution in Tennessee, the history of Jackson鈥檚 tree ordinance, engineering issues related to fresh water and waste water treatment and green chemistry are just a few of the topics that will be discussed. Faculty participating in the lectures include Wayne Wofford, Kyle Hathcox, James Huggins, Charles Baldwin, Don Van, and Sean Evans.

Saturday labs will also be offered beginning July 13. These field trips will include a field experience (man鈥檚 impact on river systems), a field trip to a gas-powered power plant, and to Ames Plantation.

The schedule for the class follows:

July 2 鈥 Global Perspective and Energy
July 9 鈥 Status of Tenn. Pollution and Conservation
July 16 鈥 Green Chemistry and the history of Jackson鈥檚 tree ordinance
July 23 鈥 Engineering issues related to fresh water and wastewater treatment
July 30 鈥 Environmental regulations and agencies and panel discussion

will be offered on Thursday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. during the month of June and July 3rd, and will explore the history and culture, religion and literature, performing arts, economics and politics of the area in and surrounding Israel and Palestine.
