JACKSON, Tenn.Oct. 7, 2004 — Thomas Childers has been selected as the guest lecturer for Union’s Eight Annual Carls-Schwerdfeger History Lectureship. He will be giving his lecture, “The Best Years of Their Lives? Americans Return Home from the Second World War, 1945-1950,” in the G.M. Savage Memorial Chapel at ̳ Oct. 12, 2004 at 7:15 p.m. This event is open and free to the public.

With a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and earning his PhD in history from Harvard University, Childers has become a leader in his field of expertise.

Childers has earned numerous awards recognizing him as a stimulating, exceptional teacher throughout his career. He has received the Ira Abrams Award for Distinguished and Challenging Teaching in the Arts and Sciences (1987), the Friar’s Award for Outstanding Teacher at the University (1989), the Richard S. Dunn Award for Distinguished Teaching in History (1999) and the Senior Class Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (2000).

Childers has also written and edited a host of books about history. Currently, he is writing the third book in a historical trilogy about the problems soldiers from America faced when returning home from World War II.

In 2002, he appeared on C-Span to discuss one of his novels, In the Shadows of War: Three Lives United by French Resistance.

He is presently a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, but has also taught at Columbia University, Smith College and Trinity Hall College, Cambridge as a visiting professor.
